Today is the memorial of the birth of Saint Edith Stein, also known as Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Born on August 9, 1891 in Breslau, Poland, Edith Stein was the youngest daughter in a large Jewish family. After becoming an atheist as a teenager, she eventually became interested in the catholic faith as a young woman and was baptized in 1922. In 1933, she became a Carmelite nun, taking the name Teresa of Benedicta, and was sent to the convent in Echt, Holland. The Nazis conquered Echt and Teresa was arrested and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. She was sent to the gas chamber to die in 1942. She was 52 years old. In 1987, Saint Teresa was beatified by Pope John II. She was canonized on October 11, 1998.
